RCCMA currently supports two ensembles:
Musical Chairs Jazz Band
River City Concert Band
Our Origins
RCCMA was formed in 1999, bringing together community members who share a love of playing music by creating ensembles they could join. From the outset, the organisation began with two bands - River City Concert Band and B# Stage Band.
From these humble beginnings, RCCMA has seen many ensembles form, flourish, and evolve over the years. Today, our community continues through two active bands - The River City Concert Band and Musical Chairs Jazz Band.
The story of Musical Chairs, however, begins even earlier.
Musical Chairs was formed in 1997, with the assistance of local musician, John Morris. Passionate about making music accessible to everyone, John established the band to create opportunities for people living with a disability to play, perform and experience the joy of music in a supportive ensemble environment - most had never played a musical instrument before!
Musical Chairs was initially supported by the Sporting Wheelies Association - an influence reflected in its name.
When RCCMA was formed in 1999, Musical Chairs came under its banner (formally joining in 2007). Since then, RCCMA has continued to honour the founding vision of Musical Chairs with a strong focus on community, accessibility, inclusion and camaraderie.
Over the years, Musical Chairs has embraced jazz and is now known as the Musical Chairs Jazz Band. Some of the original members still play in the band today — a testament to the enduring spirit of the group.
RCCMA ensembles continue to welcome people of all musical abilities and experience, sharing in the joy of making music together.
Insurance and Licensing
RCCMA maintains a current OneMusic Copyright license, covering live music performances and recording of live music at rehearsals, performances and events, as well as the photocopying of musical scores.
RCCMA also holds public liability insurance.
