RCCMA currently supports two ensembles:

Our Origins

RCCMA was formed in 1999, bringing together community members who share a love of playing music by creating ensembles they could join. From the outset, the organisation began with two bands - River City Concert Band and B# Stage Band.

From these humble beginnings, RCCMA has seen many ensembles form, flourish, and evolve over the years. Today, our community continues through two active bands - The River City Concert Band and Musical Chairs Jazz Band.

MUSICAL CHAIRS JAZZ BAND

Musical Chairs Jazz Band is a big-band style ensemble consisting of brass, woodwind, keys and percussion.

With a focus on jazz-style repertoire, we have an experienced conductor leading the group.

We enjoy playing regular gigs around south-east Queensland for community events, festivals, fundraisers and private events.

RIVER CITY CONCERT BAND

River City Concert Band plays a range of music specifically developed for wind ensembles and concert bands, including marches, light classical, overtures and popular music.

We have a range of sheet music but craftily adapt scores to the range of instruments in the band.

RCCB is currently a self-led group, which promotes a cohesive sound through active listening!!!

MUSICAL CHAIRS JAZZ BAND

MCJB is an intermediate Big-Band style stage band, playing jazz, blues, funk and rock. We have an experienced conductor at the helm.

We rehearse Monday evenings 7pm-930pm in Milton. We take a break after Christmas and reconvene late January but otherwise rehearse most of the year round.

We play at or above AMEB Grade 3 (or equivalent), and to join us you should be able to read music and have good foundation aural skills (intonation, tuning and rhythm). You don’t need to be a “pro.” We value growth, reliability, and community alongside musical development.

Rehearsal Structure

Weekly Ensemble Rehearsals

MCJB rehearses around 40 weeks per year, on Monday nights from 7:00pm to 9:30pm in Milton, Brisbane (QLD 4064).

We take occasional breaks throughout the year, with an extended break around Christmas, reconvening in late January.

Occasional Workshops & Masterclasses

From time to time, MCJB hosts workshop days and masterclasses with guest musicians to support musical development and ensemble growth.

Musical Chairs Jazz Band was formed in 1997 with the assistance of local musician, John Morris. John was passionate about making music accessible to everyone He established the band to create opportunities for people living with a disability to play, perform and experience the joy of music in a supportive ensemble environment.
